Background Information on Philip Roth

Phillip Roth was born on March 19, 1933 in New Jersey. His parents were first generation Americans and trace their ancestry to Eastern Europe. He would earn his degree in English from Bucknell University and would go onto teach at the college level. His writing will be categorized as Jewish American Literature. His other books consist of The Facts: a Novelist’s Autobiography, Deception: A Novel, Patrimony: A Memoir, Operation Shylock, and The Plot Against America. Roth’s books have usually focused on some aspect of what it means to be Jewish during certain periods in history. He tends to look at the periods that aren’t prosperous for the Jewish people as a whole and shows how the Jewish people have faced changes and challenges.
